In 2005, Marion's Shining Star Competition was launched to recognize and award scholarships to local vocalists and raise dollars for programs provided by Heart of Ohio Mentoring.
Participants must be a senior in high school and their local music departments select the participants to represent their school. Students perform in a local restaurant to packed crowds each week.
The crowd votes for their favorite performers by placing money in jars. This money is donated to the agency to support their mentoring programs. All participants receive gifts and many receive scholarships . Since 2005, the sponsors of the event have provided over $50,000. in gifts and scholarships for the students.
